1. Shipping Policies

Please note that standard shipping is through the United States Postal Service and normally takes from 5-14 days for delivery. All orders on which our Free shipping option is chosen will ship this way. At Jessica's Biscuit/ecookbooks.com, we are working around the clock processing all orders so you can have your books in a timely manner. Orders with standard shipping will ship within 1-2 business days and orders shipping by UPS Blue Label or Priority Mail ship on the day they are ordered or the next business day. Orders placed after 2:00 P.M. Eastern Time are considered to be received on the following day.

Shipping Outside of the U.S.

When purchasing Jessica's Biscuit items through this site, shipping is only available to the U.S., U.S. Territories, and APO/FPO destinations.

If you are sending a gift or need an order by a certain date, contact us to see if the shipping option you are choosing will get the books there in time.

2. Sales Tax Information

Sales tax is applied only to orders shipped to Massachusetts addresses. If your billing address is outside of Massachusetts, but you are shipping to an address in Massachusetts there is sales tax on the order. If your billing is in Massachusetts and you are shipping outside of Massachusetts there is no sales tax on the order.

3. Returns & Exchanges

Within 30 days of the receipt of your order, you may return merchandise for a refund, replacement or exchange for the following reasons:

  • The item was damaged during shipping. We will replace the item free of charge.
  • The item is defective in some way. We will replace the item free of charge.
  • You were sent the wrong item. (i.e. not the item you ordered) Please contact us to make arrangements to have the correct item sent to you.
  • You simply are not happy with or do not want the book(s). In this case the book(s) must be returned in the original condition and there will be a $2.99 restocking charge for each returned book.
  • The order did not arrive on time.

We will refund the UPS or Parcel Post shipping costs incurred in returning books to us only if the wrong books were shipped to you or if you received damaged merchandise.

Please note that merchandise must be packed securely to avoid damage during shipping. Please also note that we reserve the right to reject the return of merchandise for refund if the merchandise is not returned in salable condition due to use and/or inadequate packing. For shipping purposes, exchanges are treated as new orders so new shipping charges do apply to the exchange order.

  • Complete and enclose the return form on the back of your white packing slip. This tells us why you're returning the books and what action you would like us to take.

If its not in print, Jessica's will go out of its way to find it or to make it available, that is, if it doesn't have it already.

The cookbooks by mail concept that brought about Jessica's Biscuit® began as a brainstorm 23 years ago in the living room of David Strymish's Newton, Massachusetts home. That first idea sparked what is now the nation's leading, most comprehensive and successful mail-order/internet cookbook source. Jessica's Biscuit® is still located in Newton, Massachusetts, though not in a living room.

In 1980, David Strymish and Mark Landau (who now works in publishing for HarperCollins Publishers) took the first step in creating Jessica's Biscuit® when they placed a small advertisement in Gourmet Magazine: a single ad, offering a single cookbook. The effort yielded seven orders, and though it was not an overwhelming response, something told them to continue. They photocopied 20 black and white catalogs and included one in each order they mailed out. They received five reorders, and pushed forward.

Not long after that, Jessica's moved out of the living room and into two tiny rooms in the back of the New England Mobile Book Fair®, the family independent bookstore and book business started by David's father in 1957. During the early 1980's Jessica's staffed two customer service people, a writer and a designer. Orders were packed and mailed out by David himself. Today the company has a full-time staff of twenty-two, a warehouse and fulfilment facility bulging at the seams, and hope for the future. Sometimes, David still picks and packs orders. In fact, if you call Jessica's Biscuit® to ask a question or to order books there is a good chance you will speak to David, as he still answers customer phone calls for at least a few hours each day. The original customer base of five has grown to thousands of satisfied customers, who each receive Jessica's six annual catalogs. The company's operation now offers 24-hour toll free ordering, and a full service web site listing more than 9,000 titles (www.ecookbooks.com).

Jessica's Biscuit® takes its cookbooks seriously. Nine years ago, when David Strymish realized that one of the most important bread-baking books was no longer available, he arranged to reprint it. Biscuit Books™ --- a sister company of Jessica's Biscuit® and New England Mobile Book Fair® --- made its publishing debut by printing a beautiful new edition of Elizabeth David's English Bread and Yeast Cookery. In the years following, Biscuit Books™ has released nine more titles --- all much-loved but out-of-print classics. Says David, "These authors are researchers who bring us history. One of the things we do is to preserve and to perpetuate heritage."

In some ways, it is no surprise that David Strymish found his way into the world of cookbooks---books were in his blood. In the 1950's his father, Louis Strymish, created the New England Mobile Book Fair®, an amazing 35,000 square foot single-store warehouse offering discounts on new and remaindered books of every type. Louis was a visionary and a bookselling legend. In a seemingly disorganized warehouse, he could locate and identify any book, much the way David can with cookbooks. David recalls how his dad enthusiastically encouraged him from the very inception of Jessica's Biscuit®, projecting that "One day you'll get 100 orders!"

What has remained unchanged throughout the years of significant growth is the philosophy and culture of the company. The staff, past and present, shares a reverence for cookbooks, a delight in quality writing and an unwavering commitment to customer service.
